Overview
The Facilities Caretaker ensures MKMC's physical space remains clean, functional, welcoming, and well-maintained as a house of Allah and community gathering place. This role involves regular maintenance inspections, cleanliness oversight, event setup and teardown coordination, and minor repairs to create an environment where worship and programming can flourish. You serve as the operational backbone ensuring the masjid facility supports rather than hinders community activities.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct daily or weekly facility walkthroughs identifying maintenance needs, safety issues, and cleanliness standards
Oversee general cleanliness of prayer areas, washrooms, classrooms, and common spaces through direct work or volunteer coordination
Manage event setup and teardown logistics including furniture arrangement, equipment preparation, and post-event cleanup
Perform or coordinate minor repairs: plumbing issues, lighting replacements, furniture fixes, and general handyman tasks
Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, maintenance tools, and facility equipment
Coordinate with external contractors for major repairs, inspections, or specialized maintenance needs
Ensure facility compliance with safety regulations, fire codes, and accessibility standards
Expectations & Commitment
Time Commitment: 30 hours per month (varies with event frequency and maintenance needs)
Reporting: Direct report to Operations Director with weekly facility status updates
On-Call Availability: Responsive to urgent facility issues requiring immediate attention
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform moderate physical labor including lifting, bending, and extended standing
Flexibility: Available for pre-event setup and post-event breakdown outside standard hours
Success Metrics
Maintain cleanliness standards with 95%+ compliance on weekly inspections
Execute 100% of event setup and teardown requests without delays or issues
Address 90% of minor maintenance issues within 48 hours of identification
Achieve zero safety violations or facility-related incidents during programs
Maintain facility inventory ensuring supplies never run out during critical periods
First 90-Day Priorities
Conduct comprehensive facility assessment documenting current conditions and needed repairs
Establish regular cleaning and maintenance schedules with specific checklists and standards
Build relationships with reliable contractors for specialized repairs and services
Create inventory system for cleaning supplies, maintenance tools, and facility equipment
Develop event setup protocols with standard configurations for different program types
Identify and recruit backup volunteers for setup/teardown assistance during high-activity periods
Systems & Tools
Facility inspection checklists and maintenance logs
Cleaning schedules and task tracking system
Inventory management for supplies and equipment
Shared calendar for event setup needs and contractor appointments
Communication channels for urgent facility issue reporting

Handyman skills with practical experience in basic repairs, maintenance, and facility management
